The benchmark Nikkei 225 index was down 0.67 per cent, or 156.16 points, at 23,319.37 at the close, while the broader Topix index ended down 0.36 per cent, or 5.95 points, at 1,638.40.

The benchmark Nikkei 225 index added 0.18 per cent, or 40.93 points, to close at 23,360.30 for a weekly loss of 0.20 per cent. The broader Topix index finished 0.49 per cent, or 8.02 points, higher at 1,646.42 for a weekly gain of 0.60 per cent.
The pan-European STOXX 600 index was flat, while travel and leisure stocks shed the most among sectors with a 2.4% fall.
Benchmarks in Tokyo, Seoul and Sydney advanced. Shanghai and Hong Kong opened higher but were in negative territory by midday.
MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan fell 1.5% and looked set to snap a six-week winning streak with a 2.3% weekly loss, its biggest since April. The Nikkei declined by 1%. Australia's ASX 200 led losses with a 3% fall.
In initial trade, London's benchmark FTSE 100 index dropped 0.2 per cent to 5,842.11 points, compared with the closing level on Thursday. In the eurozone, Frankfurt's DAX 30 index shed 0.9 per cent to 12,945.20 and the Paris CAC 40 lost 0.8 per cent to stand at 4,971.04 points.
At 8:36 a.m. ET, Dow e-minis were down 163 points, or 0.61%, S&P 500 e-minis were down 24.5 points, or 0.76%, and Nasdaq 100 e-minis were down 139 points, or 1.28%.
The MSCI index is also set for its biggest weekly drop since March, down more than 4% so far this week. Chinese blue-chips dropped 1.6%, Hong Kong's Hang Seng fell 1.7%, Seoul's KOSPI sank 2.59% and Australian shares fell 0.81%.Japan's Nikkei declined 1.11%.
